Loci Kids Learning — Privacy Policy
Who Loci is for
Loci is a learning app for children aged roughly 8–12, set up and supervised by a parent or carer (“grown-up”). It is designed to meet Google Play’s Families policy and the principles of COPPA and GDPR-K: no data is collected from children, and no data is shared with anyone.
What is stored — and where
| Information | Where it lives | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Child profile: first name or nickname, explorer badge, age, home language and preferred English voice | On the device only (app database) | To greet the child, choose a starting level and read instructions in a familiar way |
| Learning progress: lessons completed, answers, hints used, stars, belts, streak days, skill states, town pieces and chests | On the device only | To plan the next lesson and show progress to the child and grown-up |
| “Show a grown-up” notes: when the microphone is on, the words the device recognised while the child explained a lesson are kept as text (never audio) so the grown-up can read them | On the device only | So a grown-up can see what the child explained; deleted with the profile |
| Grown-up settings: PIN and its recovery code (both stored as salted hashes, never in plain text), reward ladder, daily minutes, reminder time, microphone and other switches | On the device only | To protect the grown-ups area and apply the family’s rules |
None of this is transmitted, backed up to our servers (we have none) or included in Android cloud backup — backup is disabled for the app. Deleting a child profile in the grown-ups area erases every record about them; uninstalling the app erases everything.
Device permissions
- Notifications (optional): only if a grown-up turns on the daily practice reminder. The reminder is generated on the device and contains no personal information.
- Microphone (optional, only if a grown-up turns it on): lets a child read aloud to Pip, give a short talk in Speak Up and explain a lesson back in “Show a grown-up”. Speech is recognised on the device using the phone’s built-in offline recogniser and is only ever used to confirm that the child had a go — never to mark them wrong. Audio is never recorded, stored or sent anywhere; only the recognised words of a teach-back are kept as text on the device. If the device cannot recognise speech offline, the child taps “I read it” instead.
- Loci does not request internet, location, contacts, camera, storage or any identifier.
Text-to-speech
Pip’s voice uses the text-to-speech engine already installed on the device (British or American English, with optional Hindi help for instructions). Loci only passes it the words to read aloud; it receives nothing back.
Advertising, purchases and analytics
There are none. Loci is free, contains no ads, no in-app purchases, no links out of the app in the child’s area, and no analytics or crash-reporting libraries.
Children’s privacy
Because no data leaves the device, we never receive personal information from children or anyone else. A grown-up can review or delete everything the app holds from within the grown-ups area at any time.
Changes to this policy
If a future version ever needs to store or send data differently, this policy will be updated first and the change will be described in the app’s update notes. The effective date above always reflects the current version.
